This is a song I wrote after reading a short story by Raymond Carver. I stumbled on the story at a time in my life when I had left my hometown and large tight knit family, most of who were from Eastern Kentucky, and devoted myself to studying music business and becoming part of the Chicago music scene. There is a level of loneliness that comes from devotion to a craft and an academic program, but that can be a very healthy lonely to experience. It gave me the ability to look back at my upbringing from a very different perspective than I ever would have gained if I hadn't traveled to Chicago and gained the space and time, both geographically and socially, to learn and grow away from it. Distance is all about that, and about learning how to keep myself from running into the same oncoming train over and over again.
