This is a song I wrote for someone who started dating a person I was with at the time, and he was asking me to move in with him simultaneously. I was really looking for a way out of that relationship, and when I heard about the affair I reacted as disappointed as possible, not wanting to hurt his feelings that this was actually a wonderful turn of events. Then I happily drove home listening to my favorite Pretenders album and enjoying the drive towards what felt like a much wider horizon than I had experienced before.
lyrics
If She Only Knew Me
If She Only Knew Me, she’d turn and walk away
She’d think twice about it, and steal your love away
If she only knew me, if she was my friend
She would give it up to please you, and I’d be free again
Well if she really wanted to wreck my world
She would totally destroy you and never be your girl
But I got this feeling that she won’t let me down
It won’t be too long until you are gone, gone, gone,
And I’ll be hitting town
If She only knew me, she’d take you away
She’d tell you that you please her, in each and every way
If she only knew me, she would not hesitate
To make you her lover, until her dying day
Well if she really wanted to wreck my world
She would totally destroy you and never be your girl
But I got this feeling that she won’t let me down
It won’t be too long until you are gone, gone, gone,
And I’ll be hitting town
(harp solo over verse)
Well if she really wanted to wreck my world
She would totally destroy you and never be your girl
But I got this feeling that she won’t let me down
It won’t be too long until you are gone, gone, gone,
And I’ll be hitting town

J.C. Clements' lyrics have teeth and tell the truths of what it’s like to love someone with addiction, power through the
hours to pay the bills, and never let go of your dreams. J.C.’s powerful voice has been steeped in a life grounded in roots music, collaboration with her blues heroes in Chicago, & standing up to sing even when you get knocked down. Hard hitting songs for hard working people....more
